Granite and lime: how the house was built

6 min read

When we found the ruin, it was a pile of granite blocks and a single standing wall. The brief we gave the architects was simple: build back slowly, and use what the hill gives.
The granite came from the old quarry two valleys over. The lime for the plaster was slaked on site, in pits dug behind the barn, and cured for eight months before it touched a wall.
A wall should feel like it has always been there, and still surprise you with the light it holds.
The result is a house that changes through the day: grey and cool at dawn, warm and almost golden by late afternoon. We never planned the colour. The lime simply found it.
